These are key points that I have picked up on my journey. Some are light bulb moments others sound pretty straight forwards but are always worth reflecting on.
- Always keep your guitar out where you can see it. It reminds you to play (I also keep a tab of a current lick or scale handy too!)
- Keep a practice diary - What you did and what you learned about your playing. Simple notes that you can review on the bus etc
- Relax ! Enjoy your playing
- You cant play effectively whilst tense
- You certainly cant force that tune out!
- If your fingers aren't working stop and try exercising your ears !
- Be comfortable
- Even sitting down its surprising how much support a strap gives you.
- Feel the tune
- Music is organic learn its rhythm / tap you foot / nod your head
- I have found when you get into the "groove" the notes come far more easily / like drumming its almost a dance !
- When learning the Scale shapes - DONT FORGET to learn the Root Note Positions.
- For cool sounding licks you should centre (resolve ?) on the root notes so wouldn't it be really useful to know where they are !
- Muscle memory is a strange thing
- Relax and trust your fingers they know what they are doing
- Try and force them and they rebel horribly !!
